Remember that iconic scene from Minority Report? You know, the one where Tom Cruise sieves through lots of information on a see-through glass pane? Imagine being able to do that. Well now you can — thanks to Microsoft’s latest device, Kinect.
Not to disregard any of the genius hacks that have come out of Kinect so far, but surely this one looks the coolest. In the video we have included below, you can see a fully-functional UI that detects the position of both your palms and your fingers as separate entities, and interprets them on screen.
The guys at MIT then use this procedure to side-scroll through a gallery of on-screen images, pull them out individually, resize, and then throw them away. It’s quite remarkable.
Personally, I think it’s the closest we have come to ‘the future’ in a long time. Let’s just hope there is more emphasis on this as it could become a very important part of our futures.
