Since the launch of the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 we have never seen a title which allows both platforms to play against eachother online, well a recent article posted on Kokatu tells us that developers have accomplished this, however don’t expect this functionality to be available to consumers.
Recently Kokatu’s Stephen Totilo went to see Trion Worlds’ upcoming Defiance video game in action, this shooter-MMO is coming to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 and is currently in its development stages, what he was most excited about was the fact that at one point he saw people playing online with eachother, one had an Xbox 360 and the other played the PS3, they played seamlessly online together.
Apparently this is not uncommon practice for game developers and in Defiance’s case any device running the Defiance client can connect to the same server, but when it comes to the game’s official release there is no way for Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 titles to cross-platform in this way.
A little about the game
Defiance is a third-person shooter which is set on an alien-invaded earth, as previously mentioned it is an MMO game, not only this but it ties into a SyFy TV show, details regarding this show are being kept quiet at present, however Trion’s global brand director, Alex Rodberg, told Kokatu that if you are a top Defiance player you may be featured on this show. We are quite intrigued about this unique feature.
Rodberg also told Kokatu that Xbox Live “delivers the best entertainment experience unmatched by anyone else”, he hinted that Trion’s developers will ensure that the game will run top notch on Microsoft’s gaming network, however he also went on to say that he “can’t guarantee this level of quality, or control the player experience on other consoles or gaming networks”. To us this sounds as if Trion Games is concentrating on the Xbox 360 version of Defiance more than any other because let’s face it an MMO needs a stable online network to be successful.
You can find out more about Defiance, see some screenshots and find out more about its cross-platform multiplayer capabilities over at Kokatu, remember this feature won’t be available upon release, but let us know in the comments section below if you think that it should be. Also, do you think that Trion Games is right to concentrate on the Xbox 360 version of the game more than any other?
