We have some good news for PS Vita owners now, as it looks like the promised firmware update to 1.80 is now live for those in North America. We’re still waiting for confirmation on the update going live in Europe, but it looks like the vast collection of PS1 classics are now available for play as well.
As we told you in a previous article here, the return of PS1 classics is the main attraction on show here and finally a good reason for Vita owners to start putting some hours back into their device. Sony has additionally sent out a large list of PS1 games that will be compatible for transferring over to the Vita and the good news is that most of the big names are included on the list, with one or two notable absentees.
The likes of Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid and the Crash Bandicoot series are all included on the list and ready for transfer if you already own the digital version on PSN. However, we do not see any of the Spyro games yet and for some reason only Tekken 1 and 2 is included, not the brilliant Tekken 3 game.
Sony has included an official list on their blog here, but you may want to bookmark this Neogaf post instead as it’s far more useful with PS Vita owners testing games themselves to see if they work or not. It’s also worth mentioning that some games do not transfer correctly, so it appears to be a trial and error situation with some titles.
After checking with our 3G unit, we can confirm that the 1.80 update is live and that the update is just over 100MB in size. Aside from the PS1 Classics support, there are also a number of other features included, such as being able to navigate around the homescreen using buttons instead of touch. You can also browse the internet using the rear touchpad now, so you don’t have so many fingerprints on the screen as before.
Check out the video below from Sony for a quick introduction to the new changes in 1.80. Let us know if the update is live in your area and what games you have been successful, or unsuccessful with when transferring PS1 classics.
