Nintendo fans have been enjoying Zelda games on the Wii and other systems for years without the use of paid-for DLC. However, this could all be set to change with the upcoming and highly anticipated Zelda game for the Wii U. The series producer for the game has admitted that the team are now openly exploring the idea of how to incorporate and find the right balance in putting DLC in their future Zelda games.
DLC and Zelda are two terms that consumers may be worried about hearing in the same breath, but then again some may be open to the idea of Nintendo approaching paid-DLC with a different method, as seen by Microsoft and Sony with their respective systems. Those who have bought Coin Rush packs in New Super Mario Bros 2 for $2.50 will agree that it was handled well by Nintendo, so could we be seeing a similar method for Zelda?
Eiji Aonuma is the series producer for the upcoming Wii U title, and in a recent interview with Nintendo Life he revealed that they are looking at DLC for the game as a way of ‘enhancing the experience for the user’. He added that if they do plan to charge a fee it would ‘need to be worth it’ and will have to be balanced effectively in order for it to go down well with consumers.
Since everyone else is doing it, we’re not surprised to see Nintendo finally open the doors to paid DLC. The big question is though, in which way will Nintendo offer content that requires a fee with regards to an already massive open-world Zelda game? Will Nintendo be planning to create a few DLC-only dungeons that perhaps rewards players with an unattainable item that isn’t included on the disc?
We doubt we’ll see anything like extra playable characters, but new dungeons could certainly be a formula that fans would be more willing to pay for we feel. If they do plan to offer extra items, then obviously it would need to be equipment that isn’t required indefinitely to complete the main game – then players would have a problem.
What about an entirely new island to discover that is DLC only? It looks likely that DLC is going to happen for the game now, so let us know what you would like to see.
