When many gaming fans talk about the next generation of games console they speak of the PS4 or Xbox 720. It is not known yet what the offerings from Microsoft and Sony will actually be called or even when they are to be released. Nintendo have already announced their next home gaming console, but the Wii U release date won’t bring next gen gaming according to some.
Michael Pachter, who is a Wedbush analyst, was recently being interviewed by Industry Gamers and said the Wii U isn’t “next-generation“. He did say that the console was “a pretty ambitious undertaking” as it has new controls and architecture. But according to Cnet he feels it can’t really be considered as next generation.
He mentioned the problems developers are facing with the console as they have to figure out differences between the Wii U and current consoles, and how to tackle the controls. Pachter also feels there will be no big third-party exclusives for the console, and will have to make do with titles ported from the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Some may feel Nintendo’s decision to release a new console next year surprising as it looks like there will be nothing new from Microsoft or Sony before 2014. This is when many believe we will see true next generation consoles.
Trouble is the current Wii console despite selling extremely well, still falls behind technically the PS3 and Xbox 360. It can’t match the graphics of these two devices, and the Wii U should address that to a certain extent via HD graphics and beefed up internals. Some fear though that it will only match the consoles already available and not raise the bar higher.
Sales of the Nintendo Wii are now dropping away especially compared to its rivals. In the US the Xbox shifted 360,000 units, PS3 around 260,000, and the Wii trailing in with 190,000 units. Coupled with low sales for its 3DS console pushed the company into the red during the second quarter of this year.
There is yet to be any news from Nintendo regarding a release date for the Wii U, and it could yet prove to be a success. The company until recently had a good track record and will hope to continue that with the Wii U.
Will be giving the Wii U a look next year?
