We have some important news for Wii U owners now, as the gaming world sits back and witnesses a next-generation Xbox console being unveiled as the Xbox One. Nintendo has steathily revealed that a new system update is available, that will bring the Wii U official firmware to 3.0.1.
Unfortunately though, there doesn’t appear to be any major new functionality for users to play around with. Perhaps taking a page out of Sony’s book, we can tell you that the official update notes from Nintendo only mentions an “improvement to system stability and compatibility with certain software”.
Without going into specifics, it could mean that some of the titles available via the Wii U Virtual Console such as Super Ghouls n Ghosts and Super Mario Bros 2, will now run better following on from the 3.0.1 update. It could also mean that Nintendo has found and patched up some security vulnerabilities that they are not willing to disclose publicly – a move that Sony also follows regularly with their PS Vita system updates.
There’s also a chance that while the Wii U 3.0.1 update may appear to do nothing for users, it could also be paving the way for a major update to come with the next version – let’s hope so. Either way, you can turn on your Wii U console right now and begin downloading the firmware update.
If you are a Wii U owner now feeling a little disappointed with your purchase, let us know what you would like to see during the rest of 2013. Does seeing the Xbox One and PS4 capabilities make you a little worried or not?
