Why iPhone 5’s AirDrop doesn’t work on 4S

If you are an iPhone 5 or the new 5S owner then we are sure you are enjoying all of the new features iOS 7 has to offer. However, if you have anything older then chances are you are feeling a little disappointed right now. The reason we say this is because we are getting some people telling us AirDrop doesn’t work on iPhone 4S.

Apple state iPhone 5 AirDrop and later is supported, as well as the iPad 4 and mini and the 5th generation iPod touch, and they all require an iCloud account. However, it is not as simple as Apple would have you believe.

For your hardware to be able to support AirDrop you need a supplementary 802.11A physical hardware band, which is isolated from the current 802.11n band. The reason why Apple did this was so they were able to keep the connection to both AirDrop and Wi-Fi consistent.

This is a very good chance why the 4S is unable to support AirDrop. Okay, so we know the handset is capable of making the connection, but because Apple has made it consistent the iPhone 4S is unable to achieve this.

Having said that, all this sounds good in theory but will be interesting to see if these duo of bands will be able to work in the way Apple describe, meaning will the supported handsets be able to download a file via the Internet while at the same time are downloading or uploading files to a friend via AirDrop.

The reason we say this is because it is a known fact that only a single Wi-Fi stream is able to remain continuous to a single kernel. However, because Apple use a new 64-bit chip in the iPhone 5S we do not know if they use any kernel emulation.
