We have some good news for media lovers on Android now, as an unofficial app for the popular VLC player is now available to download in beta format. It’s not an official release, but it does work if you are willing to try it out.
The all-in-one media player is probably one of the most important programs that you use on your PC or Mac, and now you can try it out on Android as well if you fit the criteria.
At the moment, there is support for both Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich handsets, but the app will only function on phones using the ARM11, Cortex 8 and Cortex A9-class processors. With this in mind, there are multiple versions to download depending on your processor, with the links and instructions available on XDA Forums here.
If you are having trouble identifying which version you need, allow us to provide you with a few tips. Handsets such as the Droid RAZR MAXX, Droid 4, Droid Bionic all utilize the OMAP4 processor so that’s the file you need. If you have the Samsung Galaxy S II, then that comes under the Snapdragon S3 and Cortex-A8/NEON category.
Sound complicated to you? If so, you are probably better off waiting a few months until we hear from VLC regarding an official app – remember this has been custom made by the user adridu59. If you’re willing to give this a go though, you’ll probably be surprised that the interface actually looks very professional and most media files should play without any problems.
