It is widely believed that next month Apple will be launching a new version of the hugely successful iPad. There have been a number of different rumors surrounding the specs of the iPad 3 over the last few months, and now there is more talk of a Retina Display.
We have seen a variety of supposed leaks of parts for the iPad 3 release with many claiming to be for a high resolution display for the device. Now the guys over at MacRumors have managed to get hold of one of the alleged displays and have been examining it under a microscope.
The display is the same size as the last two models at 9.7-inch diagonally, and also looks similar to the naked eye. But it was when being looked at under the microscope that a difference was seen. The new display had pixels that appeared to be one quarter the size compared to those found on the iPad 2.
It was not possible to power up the display and taking god quality images of the pixels wasn’t easy, but it is still possible to make out the pixels of each display, which can be seen in the image below. It was found that the new unit had exactly twice the resolution in each direction compared to the iPad 2 display.
This should mean that the display on the iPad 3 should have a full resolution of 2048 x 1536, which compares to 1024 x 768 that is found on the two previous versions of the device. This should allow much sharper images on the new iPad compared to the older versions.
It has been widely reported that Apple will be showcasing the new tablet PC at a special media event on March 7th. Besides the new display it is thought the iPad 3 will feature LTE connectivity and a new A6 processor. There have been conflicting reports on the A6 chip as some reports have suggested it will be quad-core, while others have claimed it will be dual-core.
