Verizon’s Tablet Dilemma With iPad 2 And Motorola Zoom

We had assumed that 2010 was going to be the year of the tablet, but that only came true for one device, the Apple iPad. However, we can safely say that 2011 will be a different story, as a host of computer and phone makers will be launching their own tablet device to take on Apple. Verizon is going to become a major part of this fight, but most of it could be in-house.

The reason I say this is because not only will Big Red have the Motorola Xoom, but we also learned from WSJ that the carrier could also get the iPad 2 as well. We found that little gem out after there was said to be proof that Apple’s new tablet has already entered production.

Verizon certainly has a dilemma on its hands; Apple is new to them while they have worked with Motorola for sometime with their range of Android handsets — with Droid being the most popular. They still do not want to give up such a good relationship, but they also do not want to sour the new deal that they have with Apple thanks to the launch of the iPhone 4.

Picking up on something that PC World said, the new 2011 iPad could have a dual-chip, which would allow it to work on GSM and CDMA — a little like their version of the iPhone, which you can read more about in our teardown article.

What will make things even harder for Verizon is the fact that AT&T will also have the iPad 2 as well as the Motorola Xoom. AllThingsD says that AT&T is now fully committed to Android; this move certainly makes sense, as they no longer have exclusivity to the iPhone anymore.

In closing we have to wonder how Verizon will play this delicate game; which of the two do you think the carrier will favor?
