Verizon iPhone 4: CDMA Network Issues

Over this past week a number of media sources have been stating that a Verizon iPhone should be with us in the early part of 2011. The rumors increased in pace after WSJ published a series of articles about the CDMA version of Apple’s smartphone, and it is that technology that is the problem.

David Murphy from PCMag believes that those people who have certain knowledge of mobile technology will know that a CDMA iPhone on Verizon will be crippled. The reason is that CDMA is unable to offer data and voice transfers simultaneous — simultaneously, something that GSM can do.

Murphy states that if the Apple iPhone was released on Big Red now, then the thing would just not work. Verizon has said that they plan to offer this vital function in the future — not certain if this means in the early part of 2011? Which is when the iPhone was rumored to be going over to Verizon?

Verizon understand that they have a lot of work to do to get their network ready for the iPhone, and the hard work on LTE will certainly make it more attractive to Apple and a 4G version of the handset.

How long do you think it will be before CDMA can support the Apple iPhone?
