Microsoft recently opened registrations for a new Xbox 360 system update preview program, earlier we spoke about how participants would get a free copy of Halo: Reach, now we have some details regarding what this system update will bring.
According to a recent article posted on VG247 the preview program is going ahead to try out a new Xbox 360 disc format, we presume that this will be an anti-piracy measure.
Microsoft has not confirmed this, however they have said that the updated disc format will “improve” its products, this new format is dubbed XGD3 (Xbox Game Disc 3) and will apparently allow for an extra 1GB of storage on the disc, which could potentially mean improved graphics and longer game campaigns.
Blank versions of these discs are not yet available, therefore gamers wishing to download these larger disc images and burn them to discs will not be able to. In the future blank versions of these discs will be available to purchase, however they will probably cost more and finding media compatible with the Xbox 360 could be hard work.
Obviously this is bad news for pirates, however great news for Xbox 360 gamers, let’s face it an extra 1GB of content on a disc could give gamers a lot more for their money.
What do you think about the new Xbox 360 disc format rumors?
