Later this year a new version of Ubuntu will be released, today’s latest version (10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx) seems pretty popular with the Linux community, however many wonder what the next major version will do to compete with the likes of Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS X.
The next version of Ubuntu to arrive will apparently be 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, full details are unknown at present however at the moment an October 10th release date is expected.
So what new features can we expect? As previously stated a lot is still a mystery, however SoftPedia’s recent article says that Meerkat will have support for mutli-touch gestures, apparently Canonical and Mark Shuttleworth have officially confirmed this.
At the moment Ubuntu’s developers are using the Dell XT2 laptop as a development environment, therefore it looks as if this laptop is a great purchase for anyone who wants the best Ubuntu-based multi-touch gesture support.
Personally I think that multi-touch gestures are a little overrated, however adding this support will perhaps allow Ubuntu to grow in an operating system of choice for tablet owners.
What other features would you like to see added?
