Twitter and Facebook Haiti Earthquake Appeal: Power of Social Media

The sad and devastating earthquake that hit Haiti last week not only shook residents, but the whole world. Normally when events like this happens it takes a while for aid to get through, but with the power of Twitter and Facebook and its earthquake appeal, this is one time when we appreciate the power of social media.

According to BBC News, people have donated more to the Haiti fund than they did with the tsunami in Asia or Hurricane Katrina, and the event only happened a few days ago. So far the Red Cross has received over $35 million, $8 million of that came from SMS.

The biggest amount of response is thanks to the power of Twitter, Wyclef Jean, a Haitian musician has managed to raise $1 million by appealing to his 1.3 million followers. Facebook has also paid their part, hundreds of thousands of people signed up to awareness groups to help give hope to those people affected by the devastation.

BBC News wondered how the American Red Cross was able to generate so much awareness. The answer is Twitter and celebrities, with 30 of them spreading the word. These include, Jane Seymour and Michelle Obama, along with Craig Newmark.

It was then up to Twitter followers to do want they do best, and that is to spread the word. Technology is also playing its part, which you can read more about here.

If you would like to donate $10 to the appeal, then please text 90999.
