Toyota 2013 recall for Prius and Lexus hybrid vehicles

The list of recalls for 2013 keeps growing, as the latest to add to the list is a new Toyota recall for the Prius and the Lexus Hybrid. In all 242,000 vehicles will need to be recalled because of an issue with their braking system, although this is not related to the previous issues, which saw Toyota receive a huge fine.

Breaking down those numbers, the 233,000 Prius vehicles manufactured between March and October 2009 will be affected, as will 9,000 Lexus HS250h models, which were produced between June and October of that same year.

These are total worldwide figures, but we’re told that just 5,000 Toyota Prius models will be recalled in the UK, 91,000 in the US, 117,000 in Japan, 3,000 in Asia-Pacific and 30,000 in the rest of Europe.

It’s said that the reason for this latest round of recalls is due to brake pressure parts, which in some circumstances can become cracked under vibration, and as such could lead to the brakes being slow to react to a drivers input.

However, Toyota says that the driver will know when there is an issue with the braking system because a warning light will appear on the dash, and if this were to happen to you, then you should stop driving your vehicle and contact your nearest Toyota dealer.

This isn’t good news for the Prius, as back in 2010 they had to recall 433,000 of these hybrid vehicles because of a separate braking issue. We have to ask ourselves if quality control is being thrown out of the window in order to keep up with production, as it seems there are far more vehicles being recalled now more than ever?

Enter your VIN here to see if your vehicle is affected by this recall.

Having said that, it may seem that way because there is now far more media coverage than there has ever been.
