Top apps for security-conscious iOS / Android users

When you spend a small fortune on a new smartphone for you or a member of your family, the last thing you really want is for the device to be lost or stolen. However, there are plenty of top apps available for security-conscious iOS and Android users that will not only help them locate their handset if lost or stolen, but also protect their devices from viruses and malware.

One such application is the Find My iPhone app, which according to an article by A Swords over at will help users locate their lost or stolen iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad on a GPS-powered map. The app — which is free to download — will enable users to remotely send a message to their phone, or force it to play a loud sound for 2 minutes (even if it’s on silent).

If users get really desperate, they also have the option of remotely wiping all their personal data from their device. The Android version is known as Where’s My Droid. Another app worth considering is the mSecure password and data manager. The app, which uses 256-bit data encryption, will store all the important personal info that users need while browsing the net such as bank account numbers and passwords.

Meanwhile, the Webroot Mobile Security app — which is only available for Android devices — is the mobile equivalent to the antivirus software you use on your PC. The app will protect your smartphone from almost any external intrusion that poses a threat to your data. Not only will it scan apps before install to make sure they are safe, it also helps prevent spam calls and texts.

Another great thing about the Webroot Mobile Security app is the fact that it also offers remote locate and remote wipe features similar to those found in the Where’s My Droid app. If you want an app that helps you keep your files and folders private, then the Folder Lock app is definitely worth considering. The application will enable users to transfer files from their PC to their iOS device over Wi-Fi, and password-protect them in the process.

If on the other hand you own an Android device you could try downloading the iLock app, which is said to be the best file hider and locker app available for Android. What security apps do you use on your Android or iOS device?
