Telegram app popularity after Whatsapp buy

Almost a month has passed since we last told you about the Telegram app, the new way to send instant messages with your friends. Now that Facebook has acquired Whatsapp, we are seeing the number of Telegram users increase tenfold.

This snowball effect seems to have echoed similar movements with the Threema app which we also told you about recently. It looks like many consumers are still worried about the potential privacy measures that may or may not be introduced to Whatsapp with Facebook now in charge.

Consumers aren’t willing to take this risk it seems and we have already seen a surge in popularity with Telegram over the past 5 days. Just to give you an idea of how big Telegram has become, it is now the number one app in the US in the social media category – ahead of Whatsapp and Facebook if you can believe that.

A recent Whatsapp outage may have contributed to the increased Telegram users, but either way it is always good to have an alternative. A week ago, our readers were complaining that while Telegram was very pleasing to use – it lacked the user base which Whatsapp had and thus wasn’t as functional on initial use.

Now, with tens of thousands signing up to Telegram every day, a lack of users to chat with is not going to be a problem at all. Users continue to be impressed with what Telegram offers compared to Whatsapp, as you can see from our included Tweets that we’ve added for you.

Are you a consumer that now enjoys using Telegram compared to Whatsapp? Are you happy to let Whatsapp go, despite the changes that may be on the way after the Facebook purchase?
