Surface Phone alongside Pro 5, Book 2 in early 2017?

Build 2016 was considered to be a bittersweet story, because while on one hand it was a good event for those running Windows 10, it’s not so good for those with a Windows Phone or Mobile 10 handset. It was clear from the start that Microsoft’s main focus was with their desktop operating system, as they outlined plans for the Windows 10 anniversary update.

What confused and upset Windows Phone users was the lack of support by allowing even more older handsets to be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile. Then there is that new mobile OS, and the lack of its very own Anniversary Edition. What’s even more worrying is the fact that Microsoft has admitted that while they will focus on handsets, they do not have the time for that at the moment, and so makes us wonder if we will actually see that rumored Surface Phone in 2016?

Here is what we believe will happen – There is a very good chance that the Surface Phone will not be seen this year, but rather revealed alongside the Surface Pro 5 and the Surface Book 2 in early 2017. That’s saying that there will actually be one of these phones as the recent Build event does put a huge amount of doubt on that very prospect.

Surface Phone specs

When Windows chief Terry Myerson says, “If you wanted to reach a lot of phone customers, Windows Phone isn’t the way to do it,” he is pretty much saying that Windows Phone is dead. If this is true, then there will be no Surface Phone.

There is also another way in which you can look at this, and that Microsoft can see something different on the horizon that could surpass phones or become just as important. Having said that, this is a long shot, and we very much doubt that – although we feel we had to put it out there.

It’s clear to see that some of you believe that Microsoft’s mobile platform is dying, although this could be due to the lack of making their own phones. Maybe there could be a reverse in Windows Mobile 10 growth and focus if the Surface Phone was announced, and so we will just have to watch this space.
