Sprint’s HTC EVO 3D alternatives: Epic 2 & Galaxy S II Within

Just under two weeks ago we gave you information on ten upcoming phones from Sprint, and the HTC EVO 3D was one of them. We now have details on a few of its alternatives, such as the Samsung Epic 2 and Galaxy S II Within, thanks to a leaked roadmap for the carrier. There are a few other handsets that did not appear on out original list either.

The EVO 3D has been built up to be a superb offering from HTC but we get a sense of Déjà vu, as it is a little like the Sensation. However, there is one major factor that we need to inform you of, the EVO 3D battery is shocking. Now you assume that HTC would have learned its lesson by now, although they are certain to release an OTA update to rectify this issue, just like they did with the Thunderbolt.

Let’s now take a closer look at this leaked roadmap and see if you should hold off purchasing the EVO 3D? We know that these handsets will be released between July and September — so not that long to wait. First up we have the Samsung Epic 2 and it’s the successor to the Epic 4G, which was a handset back in 2010.

OK, so we know that this new phone is very different to the EVO 3G, as it only comes with a single-core processor and a 4-inch display. However, if that will not persuade you to hold off on your purchase, then we bet the Samsung Galaxy S II Within will? Now we can tell you for certain that this is the direct successor to the popular Galaxy S.

This is when Sprint customers will face a real dilemma, as they will have to choose between a 3D device or what could be one of the best Android running smartphones yet. Our guess is that the novelty of 3D will wear off on such a device due to its current limitations. There are another two version of this coming from AT&T and Verizon, but still no word from T-Mobile — although we would be very surprised if they did not include it in their line-up.

The final two handsets are from RIM, which are the BlackBerry Bold Touch and Monaco. We are still uncertain as to the official names of these, so could even change. Not much is known about these two handsets, although they did feature in our upcoming 2011/2012 handsets from BlackBerry post less than two weeks ago.
Remember that this is not the official Sprint roadmap; just one that was reported to be leaked from a This Is My Next source.

At first I was pretty much locked on the awesome look & specs of the HTC EVO 3D, but then the Motorola Photon 4G was just announced, and there’s still the strongly rumored Samsung Within, a truly outstanding Galaxy S II superphone. So we’re fortunately faced with a decision that has no poor choice. Though the EVO 3D has landed, we only have press shots, tech bloggers’ hands-on, and specs for the others to go on, but for my part I think I’m more enamored of the Galaxy S II ! Its 4.3-in Super Amoled+ display fit into the thinnest body… Read more »
