Sprint HTC Hero: Android 2.1 Update Release Date – Delayed

What on earth is Sprint trying to do to their customers? Yesterday we informed you that the 2.1 update to Android would finally be coming tomorrow, since a Best Buy leak seemingly confirmed this in black and white, but now a Sprint admin on the official forums has once again thrown everything into chaos.

If you head over to the Sprint Forums, and the thread which details the Best Buy leak we mentioned, you’ll see that an admin has closed the thread with the following message:

”Closing this thread because I don’t want folks to think that 2.1 is coming out on the 7th.”

So it appears that not only was the Best Buy ‘leak’ incorrect, Sprint customers have once again got their hopes up, only to be let down by their carrier.

When will the madness end we wonder? If they are trying to keep their customers from switching carrier, they are not doing a very good job of it.

Let us know your thoughts on this.

sprint could not freakin get an update for 8 months since the Hero was released, I am going to assume they will get on with this update thing right before Evo update….NOT!

Seriously sprint needs to understand, I am perfectly happy with my peice of hardware, give me an OS update. And for the rest who say that 1.5 is as good as 2.1 , you are an idiot. I will not buy Evo just cause its released, but instead I will wait for a second generation. So in the mean time, give me the freakin update.

I think that sprint is fucking up. This whole thing is fucking ridiculous…what kinda company can't get the shit together and at least give us a date. I feel like companies don't care about there customer at all. I know they didn't promise any certain date…but come on…really? Get that shit straight Sprint?HTC

I was told in November (when I bought my Hero) by a Sprint Rep that the 1.6 update would be available within a month. Then HTC came out with another new version, 2.0 and that it would be January before I got the update and then HTC came out with yet another version 2.1 and as everyone already knows I have yet to receive any updates! Sprint, you are about to lose some pretty reliable customers!!! I don't trust anything I read about the updates and I don't expect to get an update at all at this point. When the… Read more »

You guys are ignorant its HTC were all waiting for not sprint and I have friends with the eris at Verizon waiting for the update. As much as I want the update I would rather it be perfected first and not screw up my phone. And I left Verizon because they are over priced and lock your phone with sprint I can do so much more with my phone at half the price.

I actually have to disagree with you Sensei. I've upgraded my Hero to a leaked 2.1 version and I have to tell you that it's like a whole new phone; It RUNS 10 times faster and It appears to get better battery life. Trust me when I say this. Your sluggish Hero needs to be updated. Yes, the EVO is nice but I'm not eligible for an upgrade and I'm not willing to shell out $400+ for a new phone, so the Hero will have to do. The Hero is a great device. It just needs a little bit of… Read more »

Although I have been anxiously awaiting the update, to me, its more about the lack of honesty and communication. When I was shopping for phones in early December, the sprint rep assured me that the android update would be there the first weeks of January. This was used by Sprint as a sales tactic. Whether it was intended to be misleading or not, six months later, it has proven to be incredibly false. Now, I understand that HTC is spending time to fix all the bugs, but it also falls back to the communication issue. If they did not use… Read more »

I have a Moment not a Hero, but I've been waiting for this update because I'm hoping it will take care of some of the problems the phone has.

Hmmm not htat big a deal… Well I have been a loyal Sprint Customer for 10 years and my pone if running 1.5 which wasn't a big deal for meuntil I wanted desperately to run a piece of software that need a minimum of 1.6+ So yeah, it is a freaking big deal! Sprint SUCKS, I hope they don't F the EVO up. That's the one I'll be getting in July. Screw this joke of a phone HERO.

It's really not a big deal. As an indirect Sprint rep, the Android 2.1 system, albeit nice, is not really THAT huge of an update, and anyone who is truly craving the update, mostly tech-savvy people, are probably ditching the Hero for the Evo anyway.

The improvements just aren't worth the hype / anger. You don't want a program that's going to screw your phone over, so sit and wait.

This is BS i was so excited for the update tom i was about to throw a party now sprint pulls this bull. This is getting to much for comfort, I'm considering leaving and going to at&t or Verizon if it doesn't come out within the next couple of weeks.

Although the Best Buy leak was not an anouncment from Sprint, I still hold Sprint responsible for not announcing a firm date that it will be out. Or just simply say sorry folks you are never getting an update. I pay way too much each month to be jerked around by Sprint and this issue. Other carriers are looking better all the time.
