Sprint hails the launch of iPhone 4S despite loses

Sprint has long trailed behind the likes of AT&T and Verizon in the US especially before it got access to the iPhone. The carrier had seen its subscriber numbers drop as many of its customers left for the Apple smartphone. Now Sprint hails the launch of the iPhone 4S despite reporting loses.

The carrier reported better than expected results for its summer quarter, which came before it had access to the iPhone 4S. Sprint loss $301 million but was much less than the spring quarter loss of $847 million, or even further back the $911 million reported last year. According to Electronista the carrier gained 1.3 million new customers, with 304,000 being subscription customers.

Average income from each of its customers also rose by around $3, which is put down to the switch to smartphones. With regards to the iPhone the carrier reported the device resulted in its best ever launch in Sprints history. Sales of the device overtook Android devices within four hours of going live, and the carrier is saying these customers will be the most profitable for it.

Sprint revealed they have a four year deal to provide the iPhone, and the cost per customer to provide the handset is around forty percent higher than other devices. But these customers are likely to spend more on data, so the profit margin is expected to be twenty percent higher.

The carrier hasn’t revealed how many iPhones it has shifted so far, but did see long lines at it stores along with AT&T and Verizon. Did you get the iPhone 4S from Sprint?
