Sony PSP2: Specs Update – 3G Connectivity but No Phone Calls

We have further details on the upcoming Sony PSP2 handheld to bring you now, and it’s pretty huge news as it has been reported in a Japanese news publication that the next generation PSP will come with 3G connectivity support.

Before you get excited about this, you’ll need to know that the PSP2 still won’t be able to make phone calls, as the 3G support is to be used primarily for media downloads and online gaming whilst on the move. Obviously this will allow the PSP to reach a much broader audience, since current models only come with WiFi connectivity – 3G will now allow much easier access to network features, although we’re still waiting for details on data packages.

As reported from VG247, the information has come from Nikkei, who also state that 3G on the PSP2 in Japan will be provided by NTT DoCoMo, one of the main mobile operators in the country.

That’s not all either. Aside from the news about 3G, Nikkei also claims that the PSP2 will come equipped with an OLED touchscreen, which will be able to display the system’s high resolution visuals more effectively. The original PSP comes with a LCD display just for your reference.

What are your thoughts on the inclusion of 3G on the PSP2? Are you disappointed that you won’t be able to make phone calls over 3G, or are you more excited about the potential of online gaming via 3G. We’ll bring you further news on the PSP2 as we get it.
