Sony PS4 still distant after CES 2013

CES 2013 has already brought many new gaming surprises to the table, particularly Razer’s new Edge tablet and NVIDIA’s impressive looking Project Shield handheld system which will utilize new Tegra 4 technology. Sony has been one of the major names to appear at this year’s event in Las Vegas and although talk of the next generation Sony PS4 was not on the agenda for the event, new CEO Kaz Hirai has had to still answer questions on the highly anticipated PS3 successor. Nobody knows if the PS4 really is still on course for a release in 2013, but Sony are still being reluctant to give out any hints whatsoever on their next PlayStation system until the timing is right.

At Sony’s CES 2013 conference, the company still impressed by announcing a new Xperia flagship smartphone, a collection of 4K powered TVs and also some brand new OLED systems as well, which hopefully will be coming down in price throughout the year, making them more accessible to consumers in 2013.

That means that gaming took a backseat at the event, even though some consumers had secretly hoped that Sony would at least give us a teaser of new PlayStation material on the way, or at the very least given the Vita another showing. It didn’t happen unfortunately and it does make us wonder what is going to be the killer game that will define the PS Vita in 2013, especially when you look at Nintendo with their recent Pokemon X and Pokemon Y announcements this week that will surely revitalize the 3DS tenfold.

Back to the PS4 though and it now means that E3 2013 will be the next event that Sony attends and we obviously have a far greater chance of the company finally admitting that their new console is in development. During a Q&A session that appeared after Sony’s CES 2013 event, Kaz Hirai was asked for a status update on the PS4 and much like the company’s traditional ‘we don’t comment on rumor and speculation’ replies, Mr Hirai did say this when asked about the elusive console:

“All of the gaming fans out there, you probably know that we don’t talk about future generation technologies until we’re ready to launch it in a big way.”

So basically, there’s nothing in that all – other than contributing to the hype mill that currently surrounds the PS4. Will an announcement happen at E3, or will Sony decide that a showing at the Tokyo Game Show 2013 will be better? Either way, there is still a lot of distance on the ongoing speculation regarding a PS4 release in 2013. We’re not so convinced that it will happen.

With Sony continuing to remain silent on the PS4, are you now getting slightly nervous about the next-gen system releasing in 2014 instead?
