Sony PS4 always-on internet never an option

As you browse through the latest ‘always on’ rumor regarding Microsoft’s next Xbox console, we have some interesting comments from Sony worldwide studios president Shuhei Yoshida for you to digest. Although it seemed at one point that the PS4 may also come with some mandatory internet requirements, Yoshida has revealed that always-on for their next-gen console was never an option.

As Sony fans breath a collective sigh of relief, many of you would also be thinking that common sense has prevailed. It’s fair to say that a lot of prospective next Xbox owners still refuse to believe that the next system will require an always-on internet connection.

We’ve heard contradictory rumors that it is and isn’t happening, but at least we don’t have long to find out from the horse’s mouth themselves, with Microsoft’s Xbox event officially confirmed for May 21 when all questions on the infamous rumor will finally be answered. Will Adam Orth be watching we wonder?

Back to the PS4 though, as Yoshida has been speaking about the highly debated topic in the latest issue of Game Informer, as noted by Gaming Everything. When speaking to the magazine he revealed that that they didn’t even consider it, with the main reason being because not everyone has access to a ‘robust’ internet connection in some countries.

As a result, the PS4 will allow offline play as normal and it could end up being a key factor between the PS4 and new Xbox if Microsoft’s next console does indeed have some restrictions in place.

What do you think of the timing of the comments from Mr Yoshida? Perhaps a little dig there at Microsoft, or basically just stating a fact for those worried about the PS4 following a similar approach to Microsoft, if turned out to be true? As we eagerly await Microsoft’s event on May 21, give us your final thoughts on the never-ending always-on saga.
