Sony Pictures finalizing inevitable Assassin’s Creed movie deal

We have brought you many stories about hit games being reported to be making their way to the big screen recently including Halo and Dead Island, but it seems the most exciting game-come-movie to join the list will be an adaptation of Assassin’s Creed. Sony Pictures are reported to be the studio that is closing in on the deal to get the movie underway.

The firm has been undergoing negotiations with the games developers Ubisoft and is reported to be close to finalizing the deal to bring the popular franchise to the cinema industry. The rights were previously obtained after a bidding war with the likes of Universal and the studio is now in the final stages of negotiations involving the distribution and adaptation of the Assassin’s Creed series.

According to Variety, Ubisoft is likely to co-finance as well as co-produce the production with Sony so as ‘to maintain more creative control over the development.’ Sony is also reported to have other movie adaptations from games in development including InFamous and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and is looking out for more potential movies from game sources.

Ubisoft has announced in the past that it wishes to bring Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell to the big screen also. A spokeswoman for Ubisoft told Variety ‘Ubisoft is actively looking for film opportunities for our top brands.’ These adaptations are the company’s way of turning their games into large brands, getting them noticed by more consumers and generating deals to make them more money that they otherwise would not get.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is one movie adaptation that Ubisoft is behind that was not as successful as they would have hoped. It only managed to earn just $335 million worldwide despite being developed with the help of Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney. The company will be hoping for much more success with their next movie adaptation. Do you think they will get it with Assassin’s Creed the movie?
