We have some worrying news to bring you now, as Sony has admitted that the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan has had an affect on their upcoming launch of the Sony NGP or PSP2. They have stated that the device may now be delayed in some regions, but didn’t state which ones.
The NGP was thought to be launching in Japan first, with a release coming to the US and then parts of Europe afterwards. However, that’s now been put in doubt by Sony’s Jack Tretton, who states that Sony now has production problems on their hands as a result of the earthquake, and that they are currently considering their next move, as reported from VG247.
Below is a quote from Tretton from his interview with Bloomberg:
“It may be the straw that says ‘maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year,’”
What are your thoughts on this? The fact that he doesn’t state any specific regions is particularly worrying, and if they are having production problems, the chances of the Sony NGP coming to Europe before the end of the year are looking pretty slim based on what Tretton has said. It will be even worse if the device doesn’t make a US release in 2011 either – but we don’t want to think about that just yet.
Are you surprised that the Japan disaster could potentially delay the PSP2?
