Sony Ericsson unveils Xperia Ray / Active Android 2.3 handsets

This year has definitely been a very busy year so far for mobile phone manufacturer Sony Ericsson; what with all the new handsets the company has been unveiling. Not only have we seen the launch of the Xperia Play and Xperia Arc, but we’ve also had the announcements of the Sony Ericsson Txt Pro and the Mix Walkman. We’ve also heard rumors about the possibility of a new handset codenamed Urushi.

Now we have some more exciting news for all you Sony Ericsson fans out there, as the company has just unveiled the new Xperia Ray and Xperia Active handsets, which both run on Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. As Aloysius Low over on the website recently reported, they also unveiled a new feature phone known as the Sony Ericsson Txt, which complements the already announced Txt Pro.

Although the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray resembles both the form factor and the shape of the Xperia X10, it is in fact slightly smaller and thinner and its menu buttons have been redesigned. The Xperia Ray — which weighs in at 100g and measures just 9.4mm thin — comes with a 3.3-inch scratch-resistant screen with a resolution of 854 x 480, an 8.1-megapixel camera, a front-facing camera and the Sony Ericsson Timescape UI.

According to a press release over at, the Xperia Ray is powered by a 1GHz processor and also comes with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, aGPS and a 1500mAh battery. The handset will be available in four different color options including white, pink, gold and black. Meanwhile, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active — which is designed with sporty users in mind — is both dustproof and water-resistant.

The Xperia Active comes with a 3-inch scratch-resistant display with a 320 x 480 pixel resolution and wet finger tracking, built-in GPS, a barometer and Bluetooth connectivity. As noted over at, the Active is also powered by a 1GHz processor and boasts a 5-megapixel camera with HD video functionality. The handset comes with an arm case, wrist strap and replaceable back covers.

As for the Sony Ericsson Txt feature phone, this handset comes with a smaller 2.6-inch screen, an SMS shortcut key and a QWERTY keyboard. Just like the previously announced Txt Pro, the Sony Ericsson Txt also features a ‘Friends’ application that enables users to see social media updates from Twitter and Facebook. This handset also comes in four different colors: pink, blue, white and black.
