Sony Ericsson Q1 2011 Results Affected by the Japan Earthquake

Sony Ericsson has recently revealed their Q1 2011 financial results, the figures have dropped when compared to last year, however we have to remember that the Japan earthquake has certainly not helped.

According to a recent article posted on IntoMobile the first quarter this year saw Sony Ericsson shift 8.1 million mobile phones, over 60% of which were smartphones, this resulted in €1.15 billion in revenue, which is down 18.5% compared to last year’s figures. Last year Sony Ericsson sold 10.5 million mobile phones during the same period.

With HTC and Motorola doing so well in 2010 it is not surprising to see that Sony Ericsson’s revenue is down, also 2010 was a good year for RIM’s BlackBerry smartphones therefore the pressure is on Sony Ericsson to stay competitive in 2011.

A statement from Sony Ericsson’s President and CEO confirmed that the disaster in Japan has disrupted their supply chain, but we think that even without the disaster the quarter would not have been great for the company.

With the Xperia Arc and Xperia Play shipping we may see things improve in 2011, however we are a little surprised by the lack of enthusiasm surrounding the PlayStation Phone, also the Sony Ericsson SK17 aka Xperia X10 Mini Pro doesn’t get us too excited either.

Will you buy a Sony Ericsson mobile phone in 2011?
