Have you ever dreamed about just being plugged-in Matrix style and finding yourself in another realm, dimension or video game? Well those dreams are about to become a reality, well at least a virtual reality as Sony has revealed they are developing games for their recently announced 3D headset.
Back in January, at this year’s CES event in Vegas, is when the company first unveiled their prototype which was only capable of use for demo purposes at the time. According to Mike Hocking, a Sony Europe group studio manager, they are now reported to be dabbling with 3D technology capabilities in order to establish ways to create virtual reality games.
These are exciting times for gamers of all kinds. With the distance that motion sensor controllers such as the Microsoft Kinect, the Wii and the PlayStation Move have come added to the advancements being made with 3D games, it seems like the logical next step to bring it all together with the virtual reality 3D headset.
Someone had to step up and take on this task and we’re glad that Sony is giving it a go. The headset may look like the type of headgear you’d expect to adorn member of the Xmen, Cyclops, but it is far from a pair of eye protectors. As reported by Gamespot, it features twin OLED panels, one for the left eye and one for the right, capable of up to 720p HD. It also includes built in 5.1 surround sound, giving you a ‘theatre-like experience.’
There was no mention of which games the company are working on, nor did they give any indication of when the 3D headset would be ready for. The potential for a device like this is very exciting. Though some of you may have played 3D games before, the headset will add another dimension to the gaming experience. Can you imagine being able to physically look around you and be surrounded by VR?
When combined with the likes of the PS Move controller you will also be able to look down at your hand and it could represent a weapon of some kind in your hand. The possibilities are endless, let’s hope Sony can deliver on the expectations that gamers will have for the future of gaming. What do you think of the developments that Sony are making? What will you expect from the virtual reality 3D headset?
