Skyrim PS3 framerate problems linked to Fallout New Vegas

We have more ‘fallout’ on the PS3 Skyrim problems to share with you now, and once again it is not particularly good reading. After discovering that the most recent patch update for the game doesn’t exactly solve the lag and framerate issues that most of you have been experiencing, we’ve now heard from the director of Fallout: New Vegas that the problems with the PS3 version of Skyrim are linked with previous Fallout problems as well.

If any of you owned a copy of the 2010 game, you’ll know that Fallout: New Vegas also suffered from its fair share of technical problems. In light of the huge uproar in relation to the game save framerate problems with the PS3 version of Skyrim, Josh Sawyer, director of Obsidian Entertainment who developed Fallout: NV with Bethesda has decided to give his input to the ongoing problems.

Here is what he had to say about the game save problems which is clearly linked to both Skyrim and Fallout:New Vegas, in a recent Q&A as reported from VG247:

“It’s an engine-level issue with how the save game data is stored off as bit flag differences compared to the placed instances in the main .esm + DLC .esms. As the game modifies any placed instance of an object, those changes are stored off into what is essentially another .esm. When you load the save game, you’re loading all of those differences into resident memory.”

Perhaps even more worrying for PS3 owners, is the fact that this problem doesn’t appear to have a temporary solution either, as he added:

”We’re talking about how the engine fundamentally saves off and references data at run time. Restructuring how that works would require a large time commitment.”

At the moment, PS3 owners are seemingly in the dark on whether Bethesda will be providing a further patch update to combat all the problems. In reality, if you head to the main PS3 page on the official Skyrim forums, you’ll see that almost all threads are negative with PS3 users clearly having big problems with the game, with even one thread suggesting that legal action should be taken against Bethesda.

If you have the PS3 version of the game, how do you feel about the whole situation? What has gone from overwhelming excitement for the game prior to release, has now turned into complete despair it seems. Are you hopeful that Bethesda will be able to fix this problem fully, or are you worrying that the comment from Sawyer above suggests that this is one problem that may plague the PS3 version forever? Stay tuned for further updates.
