Skyrim more popular than BF3 – Xbox Live stats

The last month or so has been pretty hectic in terms of massive game releases. It all started on October 25 when EA DICE’s Battlefield 3 arrived, then on November 8th Modern Warfare 3 saw its global release followed a few days later by Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Recently the director of programming for Xbox Live, Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson), revealed some interesting statistics regarding Xbox 360 title popularity between November 21st and November 28th.

In terms of unique users Modern Warfare 3 was the most popular title during this week, followed by Black Ops in second place, Skyrim in third place and Battlefield 3 in fourth place. It is no surprise to see MW3 and Black Ops at the top of this list as both titles sold massively, but we are a little surprised to see a role-playing video game see more action than BF3 – are you?

If you look at the top 20 list in its entirety (here) you will see that most of the most-played titles are shooters which have huge multiplayer followings, examples include Modern Warfare 2, Halo: Reach and Gears of War 3, which take up 6th, 7th and 8th place on the list respectively. It just goes to show how much of a success Bethesda Softworks has seen with Skyrim. If you take a closer look you will see that the only other game in this list with no multiplayer game modes is Batman: Arkham City, this comes 15th in this list following a very popular release.

We can’t wait to see the figures in months to come, if Skyrim continues to outdo BF3 we think that EA DICE will be very disappointed as in terms of longevity you would have thought that an action-packed FPS with great multiplayer game modes would see more action than a RPG once people get over the initial release period – are you surprised to see more unique users playing Skyrim than BF3 on Xbox Live?
