Skyrim Dawnguard: DLC file size woes (Now Live)

Having used the PS3 version of Skyrim in all our past tests it had not been until today that we had to grab an Xbox 360 copy, which is thanks to the timed exclusive on that platform. Rather than wait another month for the Skyrim Dawnguard DLC to land on the PS3, which would mean we could only write about the downloadable content as a third party, we thought it’s best to get hands-on today and play the Dawnguard DLC to understand it first hand from launch.

Before the end of last year we had already played over 400 hours within Skyrim, and in this year that gaming time increased to just above 500 hours, which is a pattern a number of gamers have experienced over multiple platforms. The Skyrim Dawnguard DLC will bring us back to the game and for a lot longer than the 10 to 20 hours it’s expected to last, but we wonder how many of our readers are returning to the game thanks to downloadable content?

Did you stop playing Skyrim and if so how many hours did you invest into the game before stopping? Are you returning to Skyrim thanks to the Dawnguard DLC? We will be getting hands-on today although the side we choose to fight on has not been decided, so it looks like a last minute choice between the Dawnguard and Vampires. Should we hunt the evil or become bad for those cool abilities?

Skyrim Dawnguard DLC and download file size concerns – We have heard from a number of our Xbox 360 readers that have tiny hard drives, or are pretty short on space right now. These users are a little concerned over the Dawnguard DLC file size, and while we’ll know first hand what this is in a few hours it is pretty hard to find out right now. If you have any inside information, the beta, then please share a comment below.

If you want to know more about the Skyrim Dawnguard release and what time it will go live for download today, then you should see our earlier article here.

Update: We can confirm that the Skyrim Dawnguard DLC is now live and can be accessed via the Xbox Live Marketplace, which has an install size of 581.70MB and while this is not much it does seem some gamers will have to delete a few things. How much room do you have on your Xbox 360?

I was worried it would be big file but thankfully its rather small. Funny thing is the Mass Effect Extended Cut DLC is 3x the size of Dawnguard.

Since you asked, I’ve spent 200 +/- hours barging around in Skyrim to date. I did set it down about a month or so ago after I knocked out the last achievement, but I’ve definitely been awaiting Dawnguard for what seems like forever. Hopefully I can scrape some cash up so I can dive into this when I get home from work. As for the space left on my HD, I got rid of some of the crap I had stored on there, and have about 10x the space I need for Dawnguard.

581MB is practically nothing.  Last night I downloaded Tom Clancy’s G.R.A.W 2 onto my PS3, which was 10GB.  I’m pretty sure I’ve downloaded even bigger games in the past.

I recently upgraded my PS3 hard drive to 1TB.  It was ridiculously easy to do.  If you’re really short on space, I assume Xbox 360 owners can do a similar upgrade?
