Sky Sports News: Sky to remove channel from Freeview

BSkyB has announced today that the Sky Sports News will be removed from the Freeview service. This will bring to an end eight years of the channel being available for Freeview customers and is in preparation for the launch of a HD service.

Mark Sweeny from the website Guardian.co.uk is reporting that the Sky Sports News is to be replaced on Freeview with Sky 3+1 channel. It is thought BSkyB wants to attract more subscribers to its pay-TV service and sees it as a better long term solution.

The broadcaster plans to invest more in the channel with new facilities and equipment, and a commitment to start covering different sports. When the channel becomes a subscription service it will only be available on Sky, Talk Talk TV, and Virgin Media.

If the clearance is given for BSkyB £160m takeover of Virgin Media TV channels they will pick up a fourth slot on Freeview from the Virgin 1 channel.
