Siri works on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 download still M.I.A

We recently informed you about the latest status regarding a working Siri port for the iPhone 4, but now we can confirm that the same process as also been applied to the iPhone 3GS, including getting the device to interact with Apple’s Siri servers.

In case you are not up to speed with the Siri port adventure so far, the developer known as Steven Troughton-Smith managed to get Siri fully operational on the iPhone 4. This was then followed up by respected community developer chpwn, who managed to achieve the same feat on the iPod Touch 4.

Now, a new developer has stepped into the limelight and with the help of both Troughton-Smith and chpwn, Ryan Petrich has managed to get Siri running on the iPhone 3GS – sort of.

We say sort of, as the port isn’t at an advanced stage as the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4 ports, as Siri reportedly has problems working on the iPhoneG 3GS whenever there is ambient noise in the background. This has been put down to a issue with the microphone featured on the 3GS, in that it is not of the same high standard as featured on the iPhone 4. As soon as there’s ambient noise, Siri won’t work effectively, and the user will have to close the app, according to 9to5Mac.

Still though, this is another positive step for getting Siri running on as many devices other than the iPhone 4S as possible, although fans would like to see a download become available as soon as possible after all these recent teases.

We’ve included a brief clip below showing evidence of Siri running on the 3GS, although we hope that a longer clip surfaces soon as we would like to see how the 3GS handles Siri a bit more, rather than an 18 second clip showing one voice command only.

Are you patiently waiting for Siri to land on the iPhone 4? It’s still impressive nevertheless that someone has managed to get it functioning on a device as old as the iPhone 3GS and let’s face it – the 3GS is pretty ancient these days.
