Silent Hill HD collection, PS3 release date facts

One of the scariest games to ever release on a games console is about to hit the PlayStation 3 exclusively. Silent Hill, certainly the scariest game I’ve played and also one of the most twisted and confusing games I’ve ever played, combines survival horror with adventure and puzzles resulting in hours of anxiety. Originally released for the PlayStation, the game’s sequels have now been digitally remastered and remade to have 720p HD graphics and will make up the Silent Hill HD Collection set to release on the PS3 this year.

No exact launch date has been announced by Konami just yet, though a window of release points to September/October time. Hi-Jinx Studios are the team responsible for the development of the collection of enhanced remakes which includes Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3, games previously released on the PlayStation 2. The first game is not to be included for some reason and the fourth in the series has also been left out.

As far as the new features for the HD collection goes, the soundtrack score has been enhanced, the voiceovers have received an update directed by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, the series vocalist and full PlayStation Network Trophy integration is now supported as well as the obvious graphics improvement. The game lighting, which plays an essential part in the series, has also been improved judging by the screen shots which can be seen at Joystiq.

The game relies on players being able to relate to the role of the character they are playing, in order to get the desired fear factor. This is made easy as the characters in the games are always normal civilians with no evidence of military training as opposed to what you would expect from a character in a game like Resident Evil. Then limited vision from the lighting effects adds yet more tension to the experience, genius really.

Tomm Hulett, the Silent Hill producer, told Joystiq in an interview that there was a possibility that the collection would also be available across multi-platforms, though nothing concrete has been heard about that since. For now all we do know for sure is that the Silent Hill HD collection will feature on a Blu-ray disc for the PSN sometime this fall. Of course we will be doing our best in the meantime to keep you updated as the news progresses. Are you glad to see the Silent Hill games appearing on the PS3?
