Shock News: Skoda hits 200mph at Bonneville Speed Week

Skoda was once the butt of some cruel jokes about their cars years ago, and unfortunately in some people’s eyes the stigma of owning one remains. The Czech Republic based car manufacturer which is part of the Volkswagen Group, has been responsible for a number of quality vehicles over the last few years. Today we have what be shock news for some is the fact a Skoda hits 200mph at the Bonneville Speed Week.

The Telegraph are reporting that the specially built Octavia vRS, managed to top 200mph while being driven by one of the publications own journalists. The UK based team is trying to break the 2.0-litre production car record that is currently set at 216mph.

The road going version of the car has 200bhp via a turbocharged four-cylinder power plant, but the special version using the same engine has a massive 500bhp. On its first attempt the Skoda managed an impressive 195.69mph, before hitting 202.15mph on its sixth run. Bonneville Speed Week is held on the salt flats of Utah in the US, and the Skoda’s 200mph run was achieved four days earlier than planned.

A proud Robert Hazelwood, director for Skoda UK, said “”Months of rigorous planning, testing and preparation have all been worthwhile”. The run took place yesterday at 13.24, and Hazelwood thanked the whole team for their work including the driver.

Obviously the Skoda has seen some changes since it left the factory which includes the fact the car sits 80mm lower than the standard model. A race-spec intercooler sits on an all new sub-frame. The turbo is replaced by a Garrett unit that provides over 30PSI of boost. This allows the engine of the specially adapted Octavia vRS to develop over 500bhp.

It even runs on special high-octane race fuel, and has been built to meet strong Southern California Timing Association safety regulations. It comes equipped with a special reinforced roll cage, window cage, fire extinguishers, and a parachute. Would be great to pull up alongside your average Ferrari and see the look on people’s faces as you disappear into the sunset.

Would you like to own a Skoda which can achieve over 200mph?
