SE Xperia Play Android 2.3.4 update adds 720p video capture

When we reviewed the Sony Xperia Play we were pretty impressed by the gaming-centric Android smartphone, however we did state that the video capture was by no means groundbreaking – well it looks like Sony has looked into this and improved this aspect of the smartphone with the Android 2.3.4 update for the Play.

According to this recent XperiaBlog post it looks an upcoming firmware update for the Xperia Play will bring 720p video capture with continuous autofocus to the smartphone’s camera. At the end of this post we have embedded a video which shows the 720p video capture in action – we think Xperia Play owners will agree it is a vast improvement.

Most Verizon user have only just received the Android 2.3.3 update so we doubt that carriers will be rolling out the 2.3.4 update anything soon, we checked the official Sony Ericsson UK Twitter feed and when asked “When will the 2.34 update be rolling out for my XperiaPLAY?” they responded with this statement:

At the moment we are expecting the update to be rolled out during October.

Note: (You can see the tweets for yourself here)

The person who recorded the video in the first place is an active member of the xda-developers forums – therefore it looks like he got hold of an early build version of Android 2.3.4, we don’t recommend this and would instead wait for Sony Ericsson to roll out the official build as this should be a stable release.

Hopefully we will find out more about the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Android 2.3.4 update soon – what other changes / improvements would you like to see from this update? Remember to check out the video below, are you impressed?
