Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 & 10.1 Slimmer & Lighter than iPad 2

News is coming in thick and fast from CTIA 2011, we have just heard that Samsung’s next-gen tablets are thinner and lighter than the iPad 2, this is the case for both the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and the Galaxy Tab 10.1, we wonder what Apple think about this.

The iPad 2 is just 8.8mm thin, making it thinner than the 13mm thick original iPad and the 11.98mm Samsung Galaxy Tab, according to IntoMobile the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 models will both be just 8.6 thick.

When you compare weights you see that Samsung’s next-gen tablets are also lighter than the iPad 2, again according to IntoMobile the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will weigh just 470 grams and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 weighs just 595 grams. It is no surprise to see the 8.9-inch model come in at a lower weight, however we were slightly surprised to see the 10.1 inch model 6 grams lighter than the iPad 2 (which weights 601 grams).

To me it is no big deal to see that Samsung’s tablets are thinner and lighter than Apple’s latest tablets, however seeing as how Apple were heavily promoting how the iPad 2 is thinner, lighter and faster than the their last effort they may be slightly embarrassed to see how Samsung has instantly rained on their parade.

It will be interesting to see if Samsung’s new tablets are faster than the iPad 2, if so 2011 will be an embarrassing year for Apple’s tablet efforts, that is unless we see an iPad 3 in September.

More news will undoubtedly be revealed throughout the rest of the day, when we hear more so will you, are you keeping a close-eye on the new Samsung tablets?
