Samsung Galaxy S Update: Vodafone Users Beware

If you own a Samsung Galaxy S and it is on Vodafone we have an important message for you, do not update your smartphone via Samsung’s Windows synchronisation software, apparently doing so will invalidate your warranty.

If you were to load the synchronization software and plug in your Galaxy S you would be prompted with a notification allowing you to update your smartphone’s firmware, however we are hearing that this firmware version has not been approved by Vodafone.

You can find out more about Samsung Kies here, it comes with your Galaxy S as standard in the retail box, which makes this news even stranger, surely Vodafone should liaise with Samsung and block Vodafone branded smartphones from receiving the update rather than taking it out on the end user.

The update itself will bring your firmware to version JM1, apparently Galaxy S users are saying that this update brings faster performance and less security vulnerabilities, which begs the questions, why has Vodafone not yet approved it?

Here is an official statement from Vodafone “Our warranty allows you to get faulty handsets repaired through us even if you don’t have insurance on the condition that your phone is running Vodafone approved software and it is within your contracted period.”

Personally I would wait for Vodafone to release the update over-the-air, however I feel sorry for anyone who hasn’t read this post and has installed the update by accident.

Do you think carriers and smartphone manufacturers should work closer to make these issues less of a problem?
