Although we already knew that the Samsung Galaxy R dual-core smartphone — which as we mentioned in a previous article is a double of the hugely popular Samsung Galaxy S II — existed, the much-anticipated handset had unfortunately not been made official. That appears to have changed however, as the Samsung Galaxy R has now been officially launched.
According to Kunal over at sammyhub.com, the Samsung Galaxy R handset — which runs on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system – measures in at just 9.55mm thick, and comes with a sophisticated metallic finish. Although the company has not revealed the exact processor, previous evidence points to it being powered by a dual-core Tegra 2.
The Samsung Galaxy R comes with a 4.19-inch WVGA Super Clear LCD screen, Music Player with SoundAlive EQ Music Recognition, a 5MP auto focus rear camera with LED flash and a 1.3MP front-facing camera. Not only is the handset capable of 720p (@30fps) video recording, it also supports full HD1080p video playback (WMV, MP4, Divx, H.264 B/P only).
In terms of connectivity, the Samsung Galaxy R comes with Bluetooth 3.0 + HS, Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) and Wi-Fi Direct. If the 8GB of internal memory just isn’t enough, then it can be by up to 32GB via its microSD card slot. The Galaxy R comes with a standard Li-Ion 1650mAh battery that provides up to 580 minutes (3G) talk time and up to 550 hours (3G) standby time.
Besides using the Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform, the Samsung Galaxy R also includes the company’s TouchWiz UI with various hubs. This includes the Social Hub, which combines the user’s calendar, contacts, emails and instant messaging, Readers Hub with access to more than 2.3 million books, Music Hub with access to over 14 million songs and a Game Hub.
The handset also comes with various other features such as Samsung Voice Command — an easy to use voice recognition service — and the ‘Find My Mobile’ functionality, which enables users to ring, track or even remotely lock their device in the instance that it gets lost or stolen. It also comes with a digital compass, a gyroscope and an accelerometer.
The Samsung Galaxy R should be available as from now in Europe, with other regions such as South East and West Asia, Middle East Asia and China getting the smartphone shortly after. Do you like the sound of the Samsung Galaxy R?
