Samsung Galaxy Note 4 vs. S6 for bendy debut

What smartphone should debut with a bendy/flexible display, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 or Galaxy S6? The latter won’t release until 2015, but we should see the Galaxy Note 4 around Sept time.

It was only a few months after the Samsung Galaxy S4 had its debut that we started to hear rumors that it would be the Galaxy S5 that would come with the much rumored bendable screen, but as you well know Samsung let us down once again. Thankfully, for those who are hoping to see a flagship Galaxy handset with a bendable display, then you might be in luck because the Note 4 could be that device.

Samsung Mobile’s executive VP, Lee Younghee has been talking to WSJ, and said that the Galaxy Note 4 could come with a flexible display, although he has warned that it might not be finalized in time, and so could see Samsung let us down once again.

There seems to be a pattern emerging here, Samsung promises that they will produce something different, only to let us down. This has happened a few times now, and we have to wonder how long they can keep getting away with it?

We should not jump to conclusions just yet though, although if the Note 4 was to miss out on the flexible display, then it is an almost certainty that the Galaxy S6 will get a bendy debut instead.

flexible Galaxy Note 4

It is a shock to see sales of the S5 doing better than the S4 this time last year, especially as its design is not the radical smartphone we were promised, although there is no denying that the S5 is a very capable smartphone.

However, Samsung must be a little worried if rumors are true of the Galaxy S5 Prime, which is said to come with a metal body and beefed up hardware. We know that the HTC One M8 is a better design and the upcoming LG G3 is said to come with better hardware, so we can understand why Samsung would be worried.

We know that the Note 4 will have even better hardware than the three of these handsets, and so it is just down to Samsung to get that design right, and if we are to go on what has been said in the past the flexible display is a must.

The Note 4 needs to offer far more than being curved because it will need to be dust and waterproof, although Samsung will have to find a way seal the hole where the stylus sits. We also expect the screen to come with 2K technology, although we cannot be certain if it will be the first Samsung device to offer 2K, as we are uncertain when the S5 Prime will be released.

What we did find interesting is an article that suggests that the Note 4 could be released alongside a Samsung version of Google Glass, which could be called Gear Glass and announced at IFA 2014. It is not too hard to imagine a team up like this, especially when you consider the S5 was released alongside the new Gear 2 range.

As always, most of what we know is based on rumors with these two handsets, but personally, the thought of a flexible phablet is a strange one because it seems too big of a device to have a curve, so who knows if Samsung will find its proposed bendable display feasible. If not, then it will be down to the S6 to take up the challenge.
