Samsung Droid Charge, LTE Rival for HTC Thunderbolt

The HTC Thunderbolt used to be all alone on Verizon, but now there is a new 4G LTE rival, the Samsung Droid Charge. There are two differences that you will notice right away, the larger display and different software. So how do the two compare, apart from the latter being cheaper; well we are sure that a few benchmark tests will reveal all?

IntoMobile has gone all hands-on with the new Samsung handset, and as always has a benchmark test all set up for Droid phones. Samsung devices usually perform below expectation, and the Charge was no different. The graphics benchmark were 962 for the Charge and 1,848 for the Thunderbolt. The processor benchmark was 56.7 frames per second compared to 59.4 FPS for HTC’s handset. Finally the average was 36.276 MFLOPS and 39.425 MFLOPS.

Battery life has been a huge issue for the HTC Thunderbolt; this is one area where the Samsung Droid Charge was able to excel. Samsung has made a huge effort with their latest handset, and battery life figures are solid, even better than some non-4G LTE handsets.

Below are some of the spec differences between the two, with the Droid Charge always being mentioned first.

First we have the 1 GHz Hummingbird processor compared to the 1GHz Scorpion processor, then we have a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus against a 4.3-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen. Both offer an 8-megapixel camera and 720HD video recording. So you can see that most of the specs are pretty much the same, but the two seem to go about the UI totally different.

It is hard to know which is the best, as they both have their flaws. Having said that, the Samsung Droid Charge is certainly a worthy alternative to the HTC Thunderbolt. However, we have to remind you that we thought that the Charge was a little plasticy.
