Rustock Spambot, US feds and Microsoft terminate

It has recently been revealed that Microsoft lawyers, U.S. Marshalls and law enforcement officers backed a small group of computer researchers so that they could take down the Rustock botnet.

Apparently IP addresses controlled by botnet were cut off, which in-turn cut off communication, prior to this the Rustock botnet was responsible for sending 30 billion spam email messages a day and had infected close to a million computers.

According to the servers went down at roughly 11.00am ET on Wednesday, this is great new for computer uses as if your PC became infected it would send out spam and allow criminals to take control of the infected PC, also it could attack another computer.

Most people who became infected received an email which appeared to talk about pharmaceutical goods, however an attached file was coded to infect the PC once opened, opening this attachment resulted in the computer user’s PC becoming infected.

Apparently Microsoft has worked with Chinese authorities to ensure that Rustock’s operators do not set up any new domains, one researcher has stated that “If they stop monitoring those domains it could be back up within a few hours”, therefore we think that all the parties involved in suppressing Rustock will be keeping a close eye on the situation.

It is great to hear that there will be 30 billion less spam emails being sent out a day, let’s just hope the people responsible for Rustock don’t manage to come back with another botnet.
