Roku XD boxes now available at Best Buy

The Roku XD box has been out for a while now, and if you wanted to purchase the device it was only available online. But now the Apple TV alternative will be finding its way to a number of retailer’s stores.

From today consumers wanting to buy the device can head down to their local Best Buy and pick one up, according to an article by Don Reisinger of Cnet. You will also find the Roku XD on Best Buy’s website, and other retailers will also be stocking the device. These include RadioShack, Fry’s Electronics, and BJ’s Wholesale Club.

The Roku XD is the cheaper alternative to the company’s HD box, and sells for $79.99. Users can still play 1080p video content from the likes of Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu Plus. Music services from the likes of MOG and Pandora can also be accessed, and Facebook and Flickr are also available.

This comes after the company recently said they had sold one million units during 2010, and the move into retailer’s stores will strengthen their position. But it still has a long way to go to catch the latest version of Apple TV, which also sold one million units but in a much shorter time.

It will be interesting to see how the Roku XD box does now it is available in store, but does it have enough to compete with Apple TV?
