Resistance publisher shifting focus, PS4 release doubtful

There seems to be mixed feelings when it comes to the review of Resistance 3, which seems a shame, as it is a good game when all is said and done — so why are sales so poor? The game has only managed to shift around 274,000 copies, which considering the install base of the PS3 is a little shocking. There are many reasons why things are going wrong, but it is believed that the publisher is shifting its focus — no not to the PS4 either.

There is reason to believe that Sony Computer Entertainment has forgotten about the PlayStation console and are now putting a huge percentage of their effort into the upcoming handheld. Now we are not saying that Sony are abandoning the Resistance franchise, rather just making the Vita launch as big as they possible can — just a shame that the PS3 title has to suffer because of it.

MMGN are a little confused, as they thought that Resistance 3 was meant to receive a huge launch; so how come it is considered to be one of the most shocking videogame launches of all time? These next few months are the busiest when it comes to launches in the gaming market, Battlefield 3 is just around the corner, as is MW3 and Uncharted 3; you would have thought that Sony would have made more of an effort?

Maybe we are reading too much into this, as the Resistance franchise was never the strongest from Sony, but still just over three quarters of a million copies is laughable. The biggest issue for us has to be the lack of marketing, how much have they really pushed the new game? There could be a simple explanation to this, but we cannot help but feel that Resistance is a dying franchise.

Hahahahahhaah… every single time a triple a sony title underperforms, some nitwit has an excuse.  Face facts… many of those who bought a ps3 did so when it was the cheapest blu ray player on the market, and a fairly good one at that.  These people don’t play games.  Stop with the excuses.  I own both consoles and actually game on both.  But the 360 sells to gamers almost exclusively, so most multiplats and exclusives do better on that system.  It’s unfortunate because games like uncharted should move more units.

Is 274,000 worldwide sales or just North America?

I would say R3 is the best of the trilogy. I pre-ordered it and its been great fun. I agree that sony should have done much, much better marketing for it – Dead Island which released around the same time has got nearly as many sales as R3 looking at ps3 sales alone. Considering that R3 is a much better game, it deserved so much better sales. Maybe low sales is a result of the glut of ps3 exclusives this year along with some huge multiplats. Its sad Insomniac arent doing better with the effort they put into this game.

Sony never really promoted resistance that hard. In fact when it comes to marketing sony doesn’t do a whole lot of marketing for their first party titles…they could learn a thing or 2 from microsoft about this.

You can say that “it’s the Vita’s fault!” all you want, but the real issue is that Resistance 3 had limited TV advertising around launch on the channels that people that buy games actually watch (Comedy Central, Spike, FX, etc.). Youtube and small media sites were the target of R3–that’s it. You would see Gamestop commercials for Gears 3 a month before release, not to mention the continuous crap-quality Gears 3 commercial (upscaled 480i footage) put on repeat over the summer. Lets not forget that Deus Ex and LA Noire spammed TV and Hulu like no tomorrow, accounting for their… Read more »

I don’t know what happened it looked like they were going to market resistance 3 like crazy since they included it in the playstation tv bundle and they made the sharpshooter with playstation move, but then they took it out of the bundle and seem to be pushing the move sharpshooter for the game more than the game. I think its their marketing team’s fault, in all of the commericals and videos ive seen from sony for resistance 3 they just talk about chimerians, and playstation move and barely show the game. Beside the fans of the game no one… Read more »
