Record Internet Crime In Japan: Jumps to a new level in 2009

In an era when we are spending more of our personal and business time online it is no surprise that Internet Crime is increasing, this has taking a huge jump in Japan over the last year. As you would imagine ID theft is top of the list with child pornography posts, database attacks and copyright violations making up the rest.

According to smh.com, a number of arrests have been made throughout 2009, 6,690 cases were filed – an increase of 5.8 percent over 2008. That figure is now double it was four years ago — but there is still a long way to go.

Cases in Child pornography increased to 507 last year and cases where people gained access to bank sites illegally rose to 2,534, that’s an increase of 45 percent. Rakuten and Yahoo have done a good job at improving their settlement systems – this lead to a reduction of fraud in online auctions by 54 percent.

Copyright infringements rose in 2009 to 188 cases, an increase of 30 percent. There was even an increase in suicidal intentions, from the 228 postings— two were found dead.
