The Reading Rainbow iPad app can be found on the Apple Store and features a free download with hundreds of fiction/non-fiction books for children aged 3-9. The Reading Rainbow app is only on the iPad tablet at the time of writing and cannot be found for iPhone or Android, although that will all change in time thanks to their popular Kickstarter project.
You will be able to access up to 5 books within the application for free and also enjoy some educational sample videos for field trips. This content is aimed at igniting the imagination of children, and the success alone across the United States has proven how good Reading Rainbow is for kids.
The content is hosted by LeVar Burton, and includes many new educational videos with regular updates from newly produced material. There’s two modes of reading within the app, which is “Read By Myself” and “Read To Me” with Rewards helping to motivate children to read.
Another great feature is the Parent Dashboard that helps to track progress children make while using the Reading Rainbow iPad app.
We should note that there hasn’t been an update to the iPad app in around 3 months, which could mean development will continue once the Kickstarter project reaches $5 million in funding. Once this happens they’ve promised to help educate many more children for free and bring the Reading Rainbow app “everywhere” and that means PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, Android, and many other devices.
The current iPad app on iTunes includes in-app purchases, although this might change once the next app update arrives.
