PS4 hoping to achieve similar PS2 lifetime sales

It might be a bit of a task for the PlayStation 4 to accomplish the kind of sales seen with the PS2 but the head of Sony in Japan, Hiroshi Kawano, feels this should be a possible target. The PlayStation 2 managed to surpass the ongoing sales of the PS3, so we are unsure whether Sony’s next-gen system will stand the test of time.

As far as Kawano is concerned the Japan and Asia President of Sony Computer Entertainment believes this is a possibility and says “we’ll do our best” when it comes to outselling the PS2, while Dual Shockers documents how hard this feat will be, as some gamers may feel this could come down to the variety of titles on offer.

It is bound to take time installing a large user base to the PS4 and the high performance of this console could be a big factor, while Sony intends to continue their PR effort bringing news of their unique features that the public might still be unaware of, like remote play.

Their plan for the PS4 to reach the level of popularity of the PS2 means they have their work cut out for them, but if this prompts a larger variety of titles in the future this could be beneficial to all parties. Therefore, do you think the PS4 will catch up to the massive sales of the PS2 over the coming years?
