PS3 Update 3.60: Firmware Unhackable – Sony back in Control?

It looks like Sony may be having the last laugh in terms of their ongoing struggle with PS3 hackers. It has been reported that Sony has made several changes to the core system files within the PS3, changes which may make the PS3 ‘unhackable’ for the foreseeable future.

We have given you some background information on firmware update 3.60 already, in particular asking you for your thoughts on the new Cloud Storage option, which is only available to those with a PSN+ subscription.

However, we didn’t mention at the time what security updates Sony issued for 3.60 and it appears that they have been hard at work, according to Youness Alaoui, also known as KakARoToKS who you’ll know if you have been keeping up to date with all this Sony Vs the Hackers shenanigans. Anyway, he has posted a couple of Twitter updates, which should raise an eyebrow or two, here is one of them below:

”Wow, in 3.60, Sony removed all the loaders, no more isoldr/lv1ldr/lv2ldr/appldr.. but they added lv0.2! Seems they found a way to secure ps3”

Put in simpler terms, it means that Sony has found a way to secure the system without the need of using their metldr key, a key ingredient of the PS3 which was posted online by fellow hacker Geohot.

It’s good news for those of you playing the likes of Killzone 3 and Call of Duty online, as the chances of you getting to play a ‘hack-free’ game have just multiplied considerably it seems. Then again, the hackers never seem to quit, so it will be interesting to see what happens next. Let us know your thoughts on this.

Are you pleased that Sony are now back in control of their system?

Uh Shoteh? I'm sure you were one of those that ate his veges and believed that Santa really exists. I'm sure if Sony told you in order to play their overpriced consoles you'd have to pay a fee every time you had to press that power button, I'd bet you'd be the first fool to jump at it. 😮 As far as their terms and contracts, it's them saying "We're the ones that will rob your money and there's nothing you can do about it!". ;o

i agree with SONY on the hackers thing, cause i hate hackers they are low key thieves who sits behind a computer screen robbing us out of our hard earned work cause now i got this 3.60 update and my ps3 freezes up during game play, so i am mad at the hackers for making SONY come up with this update that ruined the old models ps3's. Oh yea SONY make a patch for the older models so the system don't freeze the bluray

While I do agree that if you buy something you should be able to do whatever you want to it, what the hackers are currently doing does go against the Sony ToS. If they had created a custom OS that didn't involve exploiting something in Sony's OS, I would agree thats entirely right to do. You have to remember that "hacking" killed the PsP, and if this happens to the Ps3, Sony could go belly up. Until someone comes up with someway to run homebrew on the Ps3 without enabling piracy, I'm entirely on Sony's side.

Maybe if Sony keeped their end of the bargain and never removed services that we all PAID for when we PAID CASH for our consoles then people wouldn't feel the need too hack their systems, until Sony turn Other OS back on i will carry on supporting hackers.

Maybe I'd be happier about the PS3 being hacker free for awhile if it weren't for the fact that it won't read discs and locks up on the main screen after the firmware update.

Sherman, you are indeed wrong. You you are granted a license to use the software that powers the PS3 so by all means you may be able to turn your PS3 into a PC, but you are not allowed to play PS3 games, use the PSN or any of that unless you agree to Sony's terms. The license is a contract, so if you go against the terms of the contract, not only should you no longer be able to use the PS3 software, but you are in breach of their terms. Get over it, and buy a PC if… Read more »

Sherman you are wrong! The real reason people hack PS3 is not to install homebrews…. Everybody know they do it to avoid paying $60+ on a video game! ;). And distributing copied games for free is illegal! And if the console is not secure then developers dont get paid as they should and if they dont get paid they simply will not support the console in the future! Copyright Laws are being broken! And that is a CRIME! 😉 and also unjust for the people like me who pay legally for a game! 😉

this ps3 is mine, i should be able to do whatever i want with it. as soon as i hand over the money, i should be able to smash it with a sledge hammer, use it as a pc, or in this case; enable homebrew. in my opinion, what sony are doing is absolutely ridiculous.
