PS3 firmware update 3.65, Sony misses opportunity to please fans

In the midst of all the incoming E3 2011 news and exciting announcements, we have some important news for PS3 owners. Sony has just delivered another firmware update to the system, and we can confirm that the update to version 3.65 is now available to download.

You’ll be prompted to download this update the next time you sign in online on PlayStation Network, although unlike recent firmware updates, this one isn’t mandatory meaning you have the option to install it on your system or not.

Unfortunately, the update is a minor one again, and according a post on the US PS Blog, the only changes are improved stability for some PS3 format software and also a name change for the file XMB item SaveData Utility with reference to PSP Minis.

PS3 owners will feel that Sony has missed a great opportunity here to deliver some new functionality to users in celebration of E3 week, and we have to agree with them. It’s always a disappointing sight when you discover yet another meaningless firmware update now. Also, in light of what has gone on with the PlayStation Network in recent weeks, it would have been refreshing if Sony gave users at least one new feature to play around with – do you agree?

For those of you who have already installed v3.65 on your PS3, let us know if you notice anything different – i.e game freezes or bugs that you feel we should know about. On our part, we’ll update you if any ‘hidden features’ are found.
