PS3 firmware update 3.65, Sony misses opportunity to please fans

In the midst of all the incoming E3 2011 news and exciting announcements, we have some important news for PS3 owners. Sony has just delivered another firmware update to the system, and we can confirm that the update to version 3.65 is now available to download.

You’ll be prompted to download this update the next time you sign in online on PlayStation Network, although unlike recent firmware updates, this one isn’t mandatory meaning you have the option to install it on your system or not.

Unfortunately, the update is a minor one again, and according a post on the US PS Blog, the only changes are improved stability for some PS3 format software and also a name change for the file XMB item SaveData Utility with reference to PSP Minis.

PS3 owners will feel that Sony has missed a great opportunity here to deliver some new functionality to users in celebration of E3 week, and we have to agree with them. It’s always a disappointing sight when you discover yet another meaningless firmware update now. Also, in light of what has gone on with the PlayStation Network in recent weeks, it would have been refreshing if Sony gave users at least one new feature to play around with – do you agree?

For those of you who have already installed v3.65 on your PS3, let us know if you notice anything different – i.e game freezes or bugs that you feel we should know about. On our part, we’ll update you if any ‘hidden features’ are found.

I noticed theres a new video editor/uploader under video in the XMB and my systems running a lot smoother if I’m honest. Was hoping for new apps, for example a Youtube one which I think everyone would like considering the other video on demand services on offer. Was also hoping Vidzone has an improvement but that is still as faulty as ever for me.
Oh and I am pleased with the PSP change too, have a small memory card atm so wasn’t able to keep my saves and update my PSP but now I can 🙂

after this update, my ps3 has gone crazy. it slowed my whole ps3, no matter what you do. offline or online, still same freezes and slowness.. it’s driving me crazy as i cant even play any game, because, in game, it freezes badly also. i play fifa11, and while u play, u’l have like atleast a 5sec freeze. if its online, i undrstand, maybe my connection, but it happens even when offline. i tried the full format of my ps3, and still the same. i definately think this update is the cause. hope the new update come out son, and… Read more »

Resistance 1 & 2, Assassins Creed Brotherhood freezes way too often since upgrading to 3.65 even just using the xmb sometimes causes the ps3 to freeze/lockup and need resetting.
only had it freeze while watching 2 BD movies kings speech & street kings, not happy at all only installed it in the hope sony would have made at least a few tweaks/enhancements for us end users, my advice DO NOT INSTALL unless you are experiencing lock ups / freezes with 3.61…

my system is running considerably much smoother and snappier when navigating through menus and the PSN store.

Also my web browsing, page loading, has become much much quicker.

come on, i was really thinking that they would announce a new redesign xmb and more psn features. Xbox got so many good partnerships. I hate xbox would never switch over. I’m just saying we just got cinema now, another movie partnership. Where is facebook, twittter? Xbox is about to do another update to their UI. That would be there 4th. And we still on 1.

I’d have to agree will William. This article only reminds me of the maturity levels sonys fanbase displayed during the psn outage. People cry for one thing and they fix it and these same people have to find something new to complain about. After an unnecessary welcome back package was announced they had to find something wrong with that too. They announced new headphones and they got flamed again for not putting their every single person in their company to fix the psn. They had other projects going before the outage and engineers arent the same as programmers. Now your… Read more »

Alan Ng, “PS3 owners will feel that Sony has missed a great opportunity here to deliver some new functionality to users in celebration of E3 week, and we have to agree with them.” That is a rather smug thing to write, and no I would not agree. Considering that Sony just rebuilt their entire network and took an approximate $117 million loss because of some petty criminals, I am glad that the functionality of the network and the store has been restored, with some free games and content to boot for my troubles. It is remarkable to think that Sony would… Read more »
